As I understand it, the C64 only has two arrow keys, unlike an IBM PC which has four. For games that used the keys to move, how did they do four positions? Shift?

Last time I checked it was shift.

Did you have to press shift to go left or right, up or down, or did it depend on the game?

Actually the arrowkeys wasn't used in games.
You used a joystick or some other keys.

Precisely. The cursor keys mainly are used to navigate in Basic and other word processor like programs. The same is by the way true about many home computers, even those having four different cursor keys rarely use them to navigate in games. It depends a little how they were arranged.

Typical direction keys in C-64 games were I, J, K, M. Or, use a joystick.

I was actually quite good at using the two arrow keys, probably since I did a ton of programming on the C-64.
