Just trying to get my old IIe to go but it says that the write protect is on the disk. I have removed the drive and cleaned everything and blown out the sensor. What else can I do to chect that the detect light and sensor is working?

24 Hours on and quite a bit of net reading now done .... saw a post that said to reseat the chips on the board of drive 1. Although I had already tried this but I re seated all the chips, not completely removing them but just about, and now everything goes great. I haven't used the computer for many years and it was fun looking at history. Did the drive speed, connected a color monitor and tried moon buggy. What a laugh.

For future reference, when attempting to see if an IR detector is getting any IR light shined on it, one may look at the transmitter with a digital camera (or anything with a CCD image-capture device). As long as the camera doesn't have a strong IR filter, you'll be able to "see" the transmitter in a picture or the camera's LCD screen.
