The Altair may have been well before my time, but it paved the way for this wonderful new era of affordable and generally accessible home computing, of which we continue pick the fruits to this day.

I didn't know him, didn't even know his name and haven't used an Altair. I love computers though, and the Altair was quite an important one, as was MS Basic, which he apparently also helped along. Thusly I thank him and respect him - a shame he died so much younger than necessary.
