Hi, I'm attempting to restore a Tandy 1200. It contains an 8-bit full length MFM controller card which is labeled WD1002-TAN2. I would like to use it to low-level format a TM502 drive. I looked at the BIOS and I don't see any sort of format utility in it. I dumped the binary and looked for any messages that might look like a low level format utility. I've looked all over the web and can find nothing about it. I believe that the Tandy 1200 originally came with a special low level format utility on it's MS-DOS distribution.

I've noticed that the version of the ROM on the controller is fairly old. It's labeled "62-000040-03". I've also seen references online to an upgrade called a "super bios". I've seen it claimed that this super bios contains a low-level format utility and is supposed to work on any WD1002 series card. Does anyone have an image for this BIOS? There seems to be no images online anywhere... Alternatively, would anyone have original disk images for the Tandy version of MS-DOS that came with these machines? Thanks!

You need to look at: http://support.radioshack.com/support_computer/doc1/1976.htm
It mentions lldfmt the Low Level Disk ForMaT protgram. Probably no built in formatting routine in the WD1002-TAN2. Radio Shack was nuts about external low level formatting programs.

I found some sort of version of LLFDFMT.COM:

I'll give it a try. I do remember something like that on the Tandy version of MS-DOS for the 1200 (version 2.11). Images of those disks seem to be a really tough commodity to find!
