Drives and Machines
This table contains a list of hard drives and how they were tested. Most drives, listed in black here, work perfectly in a variety of machines. Drives that don't perform as expected are listed in other colors. Overall, we think that about 95% of the drives out there work as expected.

Performance Testing
Machines
This table gives you an idea of what kind of performance to expect from a given machine (or class of machines).

(Note - this is the original data - we need to fix the wiki syntax for it ... - Mike)

Notes
It is expected that the drives we are using are faster than the target machines. So we don't list every drive tested on every machine - just the different machines.
Iotest (http://www.brutman.com/iotest.zip) - a very simple performance test. Iotest either reads or writes a large file (tmp.bin) and measures the elapsed time. If you do this on a new partition or a freshly defragmented partition it will effectively measure the data transfer performance of the controller and not the head seeking performance of the drive.
Usage Notes
DOS 5 and 6 Usage Notes
The largest drive size that DOS 5 and 6 can see is 8GB in size. Larger drives can be used but the additional storage will not be visible to DOS 5 or DOS 6.

The largest partition that DOS 5 and 6 can create is 2GB in size using FAT16.

If you can FDISK and FORMAT a drive but can't boot from it there might be drive overlay software installed in the Master Boot Record (MBR). There is an option on FDISK called /MBR that will write a new, standard MBR. It is non-destructive so you will not lose your drive partitioning. You should be able to boot from the drive after doing this.
