I thought it would be intresting to see some of each others desktop screenshots. The one I linked to is the view of my Laptop. The server isn't intresting enough to look at, and Tower1 doesn't work anymore. (That will soon be fixed.)

My ISP is upgrading the infastructure around here, so if it doesn't work, try a little later. They claim their almost done. Sure they are.........

I use the desktop to (supposedly temporarily) store files. Currently I don't have a background picture or even customized colour scheme. Maybe boring.

Once every second week or so, I try to clean up the desktop by putting files into folders - if you think I have many folders on the desktop, you should see the D:\ root directory...

Yeah, I like the stuff StarDock has. Fun Stuff, but Object Dock is my favorite.
Nice Desktop.

Carlsson, not really boring, more classic than anything. I miss the Teal desktop sometimes....

Another guy at the compuer club had made a script that searched through all readable image files (GIF and JPEG at least) on the whole system. Every time he logged on, he would randomly pick one out of all those files to use as the background picture for that session. Sometimes his script selected a 10x10 pixel icon from the web server defaults, and it would look horrible repeated all over the screen.. but life is tough.

I've got various pictures of my kids on my desktops. Cute, but not all that exciting. ;)

You could always cut and paste your kids in the desktop with vintage computers...!

By the way, I counted how many folders I have in the D:\ root directory. Currently it is 46 folders, plus some 90+ loose files. I'm not very proud. To clarify; some folders contain deep directory structures as well.

The one I'm using right now has a 'T's junk' folder. (It ain't my machine, it's Sheila's, and she already warned me, if I change anything, she'll break my arm).

I'm a bit ashamed of all the files I keep on the desktop, when I see how relatively clean and sorted everyone else's look. A lot of the files are stuff I haven't used for a year or more, and could certainly be filed away or even deleted by now.

I usually clean mine once a month, by dumping everything in that "Various Crap" folder.

Excellent approach! :-) It is the computer equivalent of sweeping the dust under the rug.

By the way, after reinstalling the computer, I have decided to keep the desktop as clean as possible (since it resides on a much smaller partition and can't fit a lot of files). Currently I only have "My Computer", "My Documents", "Internet Explorer", "Network" and "Garbage Can".

I'm still re-installing one application after eachother, as I really need them. Most recently it was Adobe Acrobat. The last version for 98 was 6.0.5, but the last downloadable is 6.0.1 and then you have to patch it four times. For some reason, the patches are hard coded to store themselves on C: even if the main installation was redirected to another partition.

I usually end up throwing everything into My Documents and making a mess. I end up useing Google Desktop to find stuff I'm looking for.

There is an episode of the French comic Gaston (known in English as Gomer Goof?), where Gaston has a total mess on his desktop, and his boss comes around asking for a particular document.

-"Here" says Gaston and pulls a paper from the middle of the pile.
-"And where is that report?"
-"Wait.. here it is" says Gaston and pulls a paper from elsewhere.

Now his boss gets intrigued, grabs something from the pile and says "what is this?" and the whole pile falls to the floor.

-"Aaw.. I had such good order, but of course you had to break it."

I just cleaned my desktop, I usually download everything directly to it... So it needs cleaning up a lot.

Begone!

Notice my virtual Gmail Drive

Actually, I never use it. Fie and for shame!

I just formatted it today, so it is a bit messy... It's set up with the multi language pack, so I can change language when I please... which really helps my work :)

It is indeed :D About 3-4 years ago Sony borrowed my 1966 and another 1949 to analyse and put in their (then) upcoming game of Gran Turismo 4. They seem to have combined the two cars, and the end result is shown in the screenshot. I have a complimentary copy of the game, but sadly no Playstation :(

My car also managed to sneak in to the Italian Job computer game a few years ago too :D

Yeah, I could tell it was an oldie (vintage), but I didn't realize it was a 'celebrity'.

In fact, I think the car is more well known than me... :/

Perhaps that is a good thing, so people can not link you with the car. Of course you have it stored at a safe place.

I can generally tell the relative age of a Beetle, judging by such things as bumper styling, style & placement of emblems, shape/style of head/tail/other lighting, style of windows, etc, but the most informative pix are the rear views, as the ass-end was the most likely thing to change from one model-year to another...

If you can get a side, front or rear view, it's usually fairly easy to get it down to a 2-3 year gap. More than that and you can usually pinpoint the exact year :)

Not bad for a car that 'hardly' changed shape in it's 65 years of production :D

Terry Yager
May 12th, 2006, 01:49 PM
That's what I meant...I can guess to within a few yearz one way or t'other...
