I found this thing in a pile of odds and ends.

Looks like some sort of reader for cards that have a magnetic stripe on them. Possibly it's even a writer.
The off part is that it takes cards smaller than a credit card and the stripe would be located in the middle, not near the side.

It's a curious piece of gear. It was also made by a company that no longer makes them and has not existed for a long time. All its external connections appear to be equally as puzzling. Might anyone know what it is or what kind of cards it would take?

It looks very much like a time in-out machine, for businesses.

Agreed--reminds me of an old-style badge reader. Same idea. I suspect that the 6 digit LED display shows current time-of-day.
