View Full Version : Keyboard interface on a Compaq Portable II

I have a Portable II that I restored and that I like to use for distraction-free writing. Problem is, the stock keyboard is really unergonomic - it's rectangular and the keys have too much resistance. I'd like to connect my usual 'board (an ergonomic Natural-Keyboard-style split one with a ps2 plug) to the Portable, but it lacks a keyboard port.
The stock keyboard's cable connects internally with a multi-pin jumper-style connector (can't recall the exact number of pins, but it had to be between 4 and 6), if memory serves. With minimal hardware hacking I could rewire that connector to a front panel plug... if it uses a normal interface.

I'm really hoping the interface is PS2/DIN, but I have no way of confirming this on my own. Does anyone here know?

If its pinout is like the keyboards on their 286 and 386 deskpro's, which resembled a 6 pin lan connector, then it should be 6 pin Din just using a diff connector.
