View Full Version : Mainframe training videos, circa 1980 - Jim and Joe?

Greetings,

My employer had a bunch of IBM mainframe training videos on subjects such as IMS, CICS, MVS, etc. This would be around 1980. The videos were hosted by a pair of men. I believe their names were Joe and Jim but I could easily be wrong on one of the names. The videos seemed to be about 30 - 60 minutes each and Jim and Joe traded comments back and forth. They took turns talking about the material and had kind of a "buddies" approach to the material that worked well. These two guys starred in a whole series of videos. Does anyone remember these guys? I'm interested in learning what company produced the tapes and if they are available anywhere.

Thanks,
BCB

That'd be quite fun if someone could find those. I'd love to watch them too, mainframe/MVS didn't seem to come overly naturally to me (staring at it without a manual).

I'm subscribing to this thread. If someone manages to unearth those videos, I'd really like to watch them.

Was googling around a little bit, but does the name Deltak ring a bell? Not sure if it'd be theirs or not.

I have no memory of the company that produced the videos, but I looked at the Deltak web site. Their company history states that they began in 1996, so it wouldn't be this company. The company of the "Jim and Joe" videos probably goes back to the 1970s, at least.

Does anyone have a list of companies that were producing IT training videos around 1980?

Thanks...

Thanks for pointing it out, but it's not these guys. The "Jim and Joe" guys (and I could be wrong about either name - it's been a long time, folks) were pretty straight-laced. This was 1980, and you didn't get a lot of humor on corporate training videos. The two guys sat side-by-side, as I recall, and took turns explaining the subject matter. I'm sure they did this to avoid the monotony of having one guy drone on for 45 minutes abut CICS. As the speaking role shifted from one to the other, the camera panned to the speaker. One guy was big, the other was average, and both easily fit the IT stereotype. But they were pretty good at holding your interest, considering the difficulty of speaking for an hour on IMS and still having the audience upright at the end.

Maybe the best approach is to start with the training company. Does anyone know which companies were producing training videos around 1980? I'll contact the companies if they still are in business.

Thanks,
BCB
