Are there any comprehensive 5.25" drive testing utilities ? Something to check speed, rough alignment, and basic operation.

AFAIK, Accurite's Drive Probe software is still DOS-based. Not cheap, but comes with an alignment diskette.

I'd love to have something like that eventually. Right now I need something less accurate and downloadable. Like all the various drive testing utilities for the Apple II. There must have been something out there similar for MSDOS.
