Hello all! yesterday my one dream come true, i found IBM 5170 computer.
But with not fun surprice inside.
No original motherboard here, inside stand some 286 motherboard with
"suntac" chipset and award bios, i think this is not IBM board?

But all not so bad
I have some 286 board like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-5170-512K-Motherboard-w-Intel-CG80286-10-FRU648-9922-/190682354076?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c658dd19c
But new problem. I don't know, this board working or not.
I don't have ROM chips in my board and CPU (((
I think i can use more popular 286 cpus with converter for dip socket (removed from other motherboard what i have)

Then what i need:
1) what type ROM chips stay in this motherboard? 27256?
2) firmware rom binary files for this board

3) IBM 5170 computer manual

The 5170 motherboard uses two 27256 EPROM's for the BIOS.

Forum member modem7 maintains a web site with both the BIOS images and manuals (and much more)

The IBM 5170 BIOS images can be found at http://www.minuszerodegrees.net/bios/bios.htm

The IBM 5170 Manuals can be found at http://www.minuszerodegrees.net/manuals.htm#IBM

I think - 2. Second revision - 06/10/85 - 6MHz machine - Type 2 motherboard
because motherboard not big like this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Early-IBM-5170-AT-256-512K-Motherboard-w-Intel-CG80286-6-C-/190677166475?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c653ea98b
And CPU must be 6 mhz (qartz 12 mhz on board)

Yes, 12 MHz crystal on a small 5170 motherboard means type 2 motherboard.
The BIOS revision supplied on a type 2 is dated 06/10/85
