Hello all, I found this forum via google. I am cleaning up some of my fathers stuff and came across a box of pc cards that appear to be for a varian 620 type computer.
I was wondering if someone could help me identify them and come up with some vague idea of their value. I remember that they came from a system that was installed at Moraine Valley college in Palos Hills Illinois and controlled a huge AutoTrol pen plotter that we ended up with at auction and subsequently scrapped in the 1980s. Apparently we saved these cards for some reason. We also saved a rack mount cabinet with a couple of huge disc drive things and the power supplys for those. Unfortunately we did not save the discs that fit them. I would like to find all this stuff a good home as we could use the $ and the space. We are located in GIlman Wisconsin.

If anyone can be of help please email me. I can send pics

Midnx@yahoo.com

Best regards,
Dave Carmel

Dave, (Regina?) if you have the pictures uploaded somewhere you could link us to them and perhaps folks could help identify the cards as well.

There is a lot of board-level information at http://bitsavers.org/pdf/varian
on the 620 series. There were several generations of the machine (620I,620L,620f)
but they had similar peripheral interface cards.

I'd be curious to see pictures of the disk drives. The only drives that I ever saw on
one was a fixed-head disk.

Hi guys, sorry for the delay. I've been engrossed in a salvage operation.

I uploaded pics of the cards to my flicker account.

Here is a link, hope it works.

I'll work on getting some pics of the drives and related stuff soon.

Thanks!

Interesting. I'm not familiar with that system but it does seem like most of the cards fortunately have their function and model printed on them. That may help along with the link from Al for bitsavers documentation.

I know this is way late, but wonder what happened to this collection of hardware? I'd be interested in the lot. I've got a 620i, and came across this posting while researching it.
thanks

For no other reason than topicality I have a Varian 620L front panel and some Varian printed brochures and tech docs. Wouldn't mind having an actual machine but for now I am happy to at least have a cool looking front panel to mess around with, maybe attach a simH interface to it someday.

The Varian was the computer used in the Vital I scene generator on a flight simulator I worked on a long time ago:

Cut my teeth on a Varian 620I back in the 70's. The Navy used it as a controller for an ECM threat simulator (AN/ALM-106B). That setup had a mylar tape system as well as 20 Mb revolving drum memory. The Varian system was very basic and did not have much in the way of peripheral cards.
