View Full Version : Config/setup disk for IBM 330?

Hey guys,

I installed extra memory in my PC 330. It gives a config error saying that the amount of memory differs from what is configures (was 12, now 16). However, in the setup menu I do not see an option to change the memory config. There is a "summary" option which shows the old config, but it does not allow me to change it.

When I boot there is also a "POST" option (Power On Self Test), that can be triggered. When I do this, it shows me an ASCII diagram asking me to insert a disk and press F1.

I have tried to google "IBM 330 Config/Setup disk", and have come up empty. To make matters more complex, apparently IBM released a 330 server.

Anyone know where I can find the setup/config disk, or can anyone direct me to a link that may help?

It should just auto detect the amount of ram. Try reseating the ram sticks.

Possibly incompatible memory? One way to check is put the original 12MB back in the motherboard and replace one of the original memory chips with the new one. If it boots like that then you know the new RAM is ok.

You can also check if it autoconfigs by taking away some of the original memory and see if it gives the same error. If it autoconfigs with a lesser amount of memory installed while using the original RAM then that would point to the new memory not being compatible.

I can find no information in the HMM (http://ps-2.kev009.com/basil.holloway/boo-to-pdf/S83G_7789_08.pdf) requiring a setup disk or reference disk for installing or removing memory. As mentioned in the other post (http://www.vintage-computer.com/vcforum/showthread.php?39501-Questions-about-upgrading-CPU-Memory-on-my-IBM-PC-330) about your system, the IBM PC330 Model 6571 requires parity or non-parity gold-plated 70ns industry standard SIMM Modules.

This is the recommended memory placement chart in the HMM for the 6571

If the PC 330 is anything like my PC 340... it takes special SIMMs that are 5v instead of 3.3 volts. Most likely why they aren't working.
