View Full Version : Toshiba Portege M4000 Select bay

Greetings, i wouldn't normally come to the vintage forum with a question such as this.

I have recently acquired a PATA to SATA 9.5mm hdd caddy for the select bay in my Portege M400. Thing is, the laptop says select bay error on startup and won't recognize the drive, BUT once windoze is loaded up and the optical drie removed and the second hdd put in, windows recognizes and uses it just fine, restart the laptop, i get select bay error, but windows sees it just fine. I would like to stuff an SSD as my main drive and use the second drive for a mechanical drive, for all my user data and crap. I'm wondering if i'm hitting a limitation of the laptop itself, ad i found a document stating for the select bay to work, the drive has to be secondary master, not cable select as alot of adapters use. So, can i make this thing work properly? Or do i have to hunt down an old PATA 9.5mm caddy and appropriate UDMA/133 drive. It's only got SATA 150 so there is no real speed loss between buses.
