I fired up a 1983 ZX and it seems to be working, at least in as much as the Copyright message appears on the screen and is reasonably clear. However it doesn't respond to any keys pressed. Any ideas?

Maybe the flex cable from the keyboard membrane to the motherboard is cracked...It's a very common problem. You can get new keyboard membrane underlays from here:

Your problem sounds like a non functioning keyboard membrane.

It is made up of two thin pieces of clear plastic which also forms two ribbon cables that attach to the main board. Over time, the plastic film becomes brittle and snaps. New membranes are available from http://www.rwapsoftware.co.uk/membranes.html

If you look through the expansion port at the back of the machine, you should see the ribbons I'm talking about ;o)
Just be very careful replacing the membrane. It's a fiddly job which involves removing the fragile aluminium keyboard faceplate so take your time ;)

Hope this helps :D
