View Full Version : Salvaged Compaq Portable III - display issues

I'll leave out the story on how I found this machine unless anyone is interested - on to the issue that is plaguing this system:

On this Portable III, the left half of this screen is unusable. Lines 1, 3, 5, 7, and so on don't light up at all.

This issue came up when I tried to repair a dead line in the display. I had once repaired a Game Boy display by holding a soldering iron above its display ribbon and pressing down on it with a screwdriver, and I thought that would work on this plasma. Now I have botched the display of what is otherwise a great Compaq Portable III specimen - its keyboard cable is in perfect condition and its case has almost no yellowing. All it needed is a CMOS battery.

I have some basic soldering skills and a temperature-variable soldering iron. Is there anything I can do to resurrect this display, or should this system be sold for parts?
