Hi all,

I know this has been discussed on here several times but as far as I can see it has never been taken to conclusion.

I have an IBM 5170 and a couple of IBM 5150s that need a respray.

Ive been talking to local companies about the texture of the "grey" section of the upper case and they say that getting close to that finish using powder coating is possible - even though they think the actual paint finish is achieved by using stove enamel, and doing a second pass of the paint with the paint pressure reduced way down to create the texture.

The problem is identifying either a pantone or RAL colour code for the "grey" and if possible for the "white" front of the machine.

Looking at some pantone swatches earlier we felt that a colour 2324 C was the best match for the case - you can view 2324 C by entering the code on this page: http://www.pantone.co.uk/pages/pantone/colorfinder.aspx but looking at it now on the monitor it looks way out! I know the colour calibration of individual monitors can vary significantly.

Does anybody on here have either Pantone or RAL colour charts, and a 5150 or 5170 etc they can compare colours with please?

Can't you get the color computer matched in the paint section of a hardware store? I stopped using swatches a long time ago and started bringing in actual paint chips for an exact match on normal paint jobs. I would think you could match a case the same way.

The problem is, because I am looking at using powder coating to recreate the texture as closely as possible we are in the hands of the powder coating people colour wise and they use RAL colours. Otherwise I'll have to get the machines powder coated for texture and treat that as a base coat, and get the correct colour sprayed on top.

I'll have a word with the hardware store and see if they can help though.
