View Full Version : Apricot Dbase II - Disk Error

It worked about half a dozen times. Then one day I inserted the floppy into my FP and the drive simply "stopped". This is the old Sony drives with the solenoid driven head lifting mechanism and the motor always operates. The drive should never stop. It's not like the media inside is stuck. Something just tells the drive to stop spinning. I can't even archive it on any other PC. Raread won't even touch it. It just says the address mark is not found and fails. The disk surface itself is fine. There's no scratches or wear related damage.

Old floppies fail. It's just the nature of the beast.

It might be worth trying APRIDISK (http://actapricot.org/support/apricot_apridisk.html) to try and archive it if you haven't already, I've never used it myself so can't vouch for it. Though if the disk has gone bad you're probably out of luck.

I can understand the disk going bad with age but not so badly that it will signal a Sony drive to stop. I have never seen this behaviour.
Apridisk is crap (I've always used rawread to image my Apricot disks because it has more verbose errors). Seriously, the whole archive is like a bomb went off (I don't think he ever finished archiving his disks. Is he even still alive??) and no, no backup copy exists that I've found.
