Ive had a Speak & Math since they were new. (Don't laugh: Sure these were targeted at children but they are challenging for most adults, and, good practise!)

I remember seeing the Speak & Spell when it was new, but never owned one until today. I was surprised at how primitive it seems compared to the Speak & Maths. Obviously it's a few years earlier, but for some reason I didn't expect such a drastic difference. The software in the Maths is very polished and complete.

Why post this here? It sure is a vintage computer, albeit a special-purpose one rather than a general-purpose one. Actually these are remarkable machines considering the times. I seem to recall hardware interfaces for these to connect them to home computers in the mid 1980s as well.

I used to have the Radio Electronics magazine that went into building the interface for a ZX81. IT pretty much just POKE'd the various phrases and words in the machine's memory but mentions that you can code your own words if you had the time. I lent it out. I should get it back some time to at least see which issue it was since someone has already scanned it in.

Yeah, they are actually fairly interesting. Picked up a couple of the 70's version Speak&Spells at a flea market, also remembering that computer interface article. I may have read something about an Altair 8800 interface, but it might be wishful memory.

Just found it. It has, by far the cheapest keyboard I have ever seen. Tactile domes from hell, but at least they aren't spongy. yeah, the early model had four IC's. a 40 pin processor (speech synth) called TMC0721, a smaller pin pitch IC, TM0281, no documentation on that, and the two 128K rom's. the expansion cartridges are literally just another rom and a card-edge connector.
-Somebody's gotta make an eprom cartridge to add cursing!

I fear there will come a day when 99% of the remaining Speak & Spells are all circuit bent monstrosities :(

There's a copy of that article on my site at http://www.99er.net/download2/index.php?act=view&id=146. That's the download link; There's some more info about it on the Speak & Spell page at http://www.99er.net/spkspell.html.
