I'm finally starting to archive the more than 1,500 8" disks that I have. Here is my intended method. If anyone has any comments, please speak up. The ultimate goal is an online searchable database of these disks.

number each diskette sequentially with date
taking a digital picture of the label
Making a catweasel image of the contents
Makine an ImageDisk image of the contents

From the above information, I intend to store the following information in a database:

Diskette number
Any text from the label
Source of diskette
Batch Number (for grouping by source)
System if known
OS used if known
Date of origin if known
Date acquired
Description of contents
if commercial software, the publisher/author
Catalog/Directory of diskette
Disk size
Number of sides
Density
Photo of the label
Both disk images

I saw your post of ClassicCmp, and it was met with general approval there, so there really isn't much more to say about it.

I've done a similar level of archiving with my DOS floppies:

- Digital image of the label
- Sector-by-sector dump for non-protected diskettes.
- Teledisk and Central Point Option board for protected diskettes
- Zip archive for individual files

Now if only I had time to go through all of the contents of the diskettes ...
