I'm sure there must have been, although rare, a version of DOS 6.22 available on 360k. Does anyone have this flavor or know where such images might hide?

Thanks,
Daniel

I migrated 6.22 onto 360k disks from another install. :-)

I have an image of that 360k bootable 6.22 if that's what you're looking for.

There was a card in the retail box that you could send in and get 1.2M or 360K disks. I should have a set around here somewhere.

edit: I have the 6.0 upgrade and the 6.2 upgrade on 360K disks, but not the 6.22 step-up. Unless it's in a different box.

How many floppies and is it possible to get images?

There is a 360K 6.21 upgrade set on eBeh:

12 disks in each set. I'll see if there is anything on them to make an image of. I hope that ebay seller's garage has heat and AC, otherwise those disks aren't going to be worth much.

Only missing DoubleSpace because Stac Electronics was going WAAH WAAH. :)

Man, I hated DoubleSpace. They should have called it LittleSpace, it was a lot of trouble for a little extra hard drive space. Almost as irritating as the tape drive companies that rated tapes at twice the actual capacity. Put 10.2 MB onto a 20 MB tape and presto! it's full. Anyway, the disk images are done, but they are not error-free. If they don't work, I have the 1.44MB versions, we can probably transplant files from them until we get a working set. PM me an email address and I'll send them out.

MSDN also distributed the upgrade on CD. I can probably find it if anyone gets desperate.

Anybody know what the "enhanced tools" are?

SomeGuy

I believe "Enhanced Tools" is how they referred to OEM versions of DOS 6.x. These sometimes may have include extra tools specific to an OEMs hardware.

I have a set of 1.44MB DOS 6 disks with enhanced tools but they are from Microsoft, not an OEM. I don't think I have any other full versions, just upgrades.

MS-DOS 6.22 (360KB) disks are listed.

MS-DOS 6.xx with Enhanced Tools --> This is OEM full version of Microsoft Genuine.

Only retail version of Microsoft MS-DOS is upgrade or step-up version.

Seconded. I've done this for decades. Do a clean install on some system, format a: /s to the media you need, copy fdisk.* and format.* a:, then boot the target and set up the drive. Then, use your favorite copying solution (network, floppies, laplink/fastlynx cable, etc.) to copy over C:\DOS.

Would disk listings of the twelve disks allow anyone to make a "canonical" 360KB 6.22 set?

@GottaLottaStuff

MS-DOS with Enhanced Tools is just OEM full version from Microsoft Genuine.
(No upgrade version.)

Actually, I found some diskettes that have been in my garage since 2003. No heat or AC. To my surprise, most of them are fine.

MS-DOS 6.22 Upgrade (3.5" 720KB)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MS-DOS-6-22-Upgrade-Seven-7-3-5-Low-Density-720K-Floppy-Disks-Media-Only/302430010299

This is selling on eBay.
I think it seems to be very rare than 360KB of MS-DOS 6.22 Upgrade.

Anybody know what the "enhanced tools" are?

AFAIK there where two OEM versions of MS-DOS 6.0:

* MS-DOS 6.00 plus Enhanced Tools. This is the full version with all the tools that are included in the Upgrade (retail) version.

* MS-DOS 6.00 Base. This is a reduced version for cost-conscious OEMs. The (non original) copy I have consists of two 3.5 1.44 diskettes.

What you DON'T get in this version
- MS Antivirus
- MS Backup. It comes with BACKUP instead.
- Doublespace
- DOSSHELL
- MSCDEX
- None of the windows utilities

What you DO get in this version
- MS Defrag
- Memmaker
- UNDELETE (DOS version only)
- MS-DOS boot enhancements (F5/F8, CONFIG.SYS Menus, MOVE command)

IO.SYS and COMMAND.COM are different. IO.SYS does not preload DBLSPACE.BIN even if it's present. HELP has entries for the missing utils explaining that you should contact your software vendor to get the Upgrade (I suppose they refer to the retail package). Another difference is the timestamp of the files in the distribution disks which is 5.0 instead of 6.0 (I suppose this is to better differenciate the two versions).

In retrospective this "Base" version makes more sense than the "Enhanced Tools" one. MSAV and MSBACKUP are nothing to write home about and Doublespace ... Well you should be grateful to your OEM to not had included that horror ...

Did anyone ever find these and make images? I I know I bought DOS 6.22 at Walmart when it was new and it was on 3.5" floppies and sent in the card to get the 13 360k floppies. I need to check with my mother and see if they are in a closet somewhere at her house.
