View Full Version : XT Slight Upgrade

I have a new (to me) XT that I would like to upgrade slightly, not too much as I would get one of my old PCs out of storage if I wanted something faster etc.

It looks like this up front ...

37400

and this inside ...

37401

So as you can see I have a spare slot and a backup tape controller.

I'm thinking of putting a sound card (bought an 8 bit sound card CT(something) Rev 3, on EBay, on its way) in the spare slot and an SD card XTIDE Optima (on its way, I've seen the thread about it looking a bit dodgy, no decoupling caps, white solder resist etc, but I'll see how I get on, I can always solder some caps on the back) in the tape controller slot.

37403

My question is this, is there anything useful to put in the tape slot (on the front), for example possibly a 3.5 floppy, did they do any that would look OK in the slot, or something else?

My other question is I popped a tantalum cap just to the back of the PC and it looks like it's got 3 legs, can you get hold of these anymore and what's the third leg for?

37404

Thank you for your time if you look/respond to this :)

You can use a normal two leg cap in its place. Just be sure to get the polarity right.

There are 3.5"-to-5.25" adapter trays all over Ebay. They're even black. Perfect for replacing that half-height tape drive. Just find a black Sony 3.5" drive (although mine gave me problems) and fire away (or a more reliable Mitsumi or Matsushita beige drive if you dont care about keeping it all black). Although it will probably only work at 720k, and you'll need a card-edge adaptor anyway.

Thank you, sounds like a plan :)

All-black Samsungs are also available from time-to-time on eBay. Bought a batch of them from a seller a couple of months ago. Citizen drives work well and can be had in black.

Lots of useful information on the 5160 and others on Modem7's website, see the 5160 floppy drive support page (http://www.minuszerodegrees.net/5160/floppy_diskette/5160_floppy_drive_support.htm).

How very strange. I swear I have the exact same caddy, but in white. It's been sitting in my spares box for, well, the last decade or two. :)

Biggest difference is that mine has a snap-out panel (never removed) so I can use the little sucker as a blank fascia.

Mine was from StarTech, it's plastic.

Does anybody know which jack is for the speakers?

The 3.5 inch floppy drive is also installed, the distance between connectors on ribbon cable is too short to attach both floppy drives (I have an adapter coming soon, hopefully), so I might have to make an extension ribbon cable.

I usually carefully remove the connector and move it further down the floppy cable in that situation, done it many times, Or just get another floppy cable.

Whoohooo my new serial Microsoft mouse and 3.5 inch floppy drive are now working. The Acorn A4000 can read/write HD 1.44 MB floppies as well as DD 720K floppies and is acting as a go between, between the USB floppy drive on my Windows Vista PC and the XT
