View Full Version : Toshiba T5200 Dead FDD

Toshiba T5200 works perfect, except floppy drive. Drive has power, goes through seek test. "Data error reading drive A:" no prompt after inserting disk. Cleaned heads.

I have read about this in others threads. I also see research on pin conversion.

This seems like good solution for using standard 34-pin FDD:

I cannot remember if original FDD requires to be set to DS0 for proper operation.

I also want to troubleshoot original FDD to see if can be repaired. Perhaps motor is bad.

Am also expecting to create custom cable for each scenario.

I wonder if other users have come up with better solution.

I had the same problem with a T3100SX and ended up building a custom 34-pin to 26-pin cable. It wasn't too hard. See: http://www.vcfed.org/forum/showthread.php?56199-Non-standard-Citizen-26-pin-floppy-drives

One big gotcha I discovered is that the T3100SX requires a READY signal from the drive, which modern drives don't generate. By sheer luck my salvaged drive had a jumper setting to configure it to generate this signal. Without the jumper setting, it almost worked, but the laptop wouldn't transfer data and just produced disk errors. You might need this as well.
