I took out the eight screws, but do not know what to do with the lever (release?) covered in red plastic that's sticking out. Opening the case is necessary to inspect/change the CMOS battery.

Only thing I can think of is to perhaps turn the tab and then pull it out.

I have an AT Gateway 2000 so I can't help you there, but welcome to the Gateway 2000 club!

That is not a lever. It is a little plastic cover over a metal tab designed to take a cable so computer could be locked in place. Slid the red plastic cover back and it will pop off. Then, pull the case cover back a couple inches to pop it loose and then pull it up and backwards.

Note: if you do not plan on using a cable to keep someone from stealing the computer, snip off the little metal tab so it lies flush with the back of the case. Sliding the cover over that tab while also trying to keep the front and sides in their proper places is very difficult. Just a warning from 20 years of use of my G6-300 tower.
