I just bought a Compaq Portable off Ebay. From what I've seen, it has the same style keyboard as my Kaypro with the deteriorating foam pads.

This computer is going to have a much needed purpose, and I'm going to be hammering away at that keyboard quite a bit. I was wondering if it's physically possible to replace the Compaq keyboard with an IBM Model F? They look like they could be somewhat interchangeable, but I currently don't have a Model F to compare it with.

Well, physically the Compaq keyboard latches over the front and becomes the bottom of the case.

But electrically, someone posted a while back that is sort of is possible. The Compaq keyboard uses a different voltage, and it has an extra wire for something. But supposedly once those are accounted for, it uses the same keyboard protocol as the PC/XT style keyboards. Have not tried that myself.
