I have just bought an NCR 3230 486 (for my many 5 1/4 floppies. The hard disk is clean. What do I do now? What operating system?

That depends. What's on the "many 5 1/4 floppies"?
Personally, I'd go with FreeDOS (http://www.freedos.org/).

If it were me I'd go with CP/M - but hey that's just me.

Chances are the 5.25" disks are DOS formatted - are they High Density disks or just the Double Density?

I have the disks for that system (or that NCR 486 family). Windows 3.1 I believe. I believe that they are in 5 1/4" format. Make me an offer! I will test before shipping to verify disks. (via PM)

I would pick OS/2, probably Version 3. NCR would have had device drivers for that system.

Lots of those were put into banks, I've seen a few over the years...all running one version or another of OS/2.
