Into Alpha land

by Gary C on November 20th, 2020 at 03:46 AM
Paul (PG31) gifted me three Alpha machines (what a star) and I have been investigating them.

First up is a DS10 AlphaServer 600MHz but it won't start. PSU would not fire up and without a drawing trying to find out what it failed has proved fruitless (so far). I happened to have a ATX PSU that was only an amp out on the +5 and +3.3 lines so that has been spliced in and it now powers up.
However, still no joy. I am not getting any activity on any bus (except the independent monitoring

Crazy year

by Gary C on October 13th, 2020 at 08:21 AM
I do hope next year will be better.

Booked a holiday to Greece at the end of 2019 to travel September 2020 but with the uncertainty we refused to pay the balance in May meaning we lost the deposit, then we booked a trip to Santorini then with 20 hours to go, that was cancelled by the travel operator when it went on the Quarantine list.

Then I had to splash out 2.5K fixing the Porsche (first world problem or what) with new brakes and tyres.

More luck

Piles of computers

by Gary C on September 27th, 2020 at 04:11 AM
Exciting month

Daver2 arranged for some equipment from work to be picked up from the station by various interested parties. Arrived at the building to see a pile of DEC equipment (apparently it was much bigger earlier).
Took home a Microvax3300 and a microvax II. Maybe this time I wont blow up the PSU on the 3300 (labelled 240V, actually 110V) and then I can use it to diagnose the first unit and eventually have two working 3300's.

Last week met PG31 who had three

Wife thinks I am mad

by Gary C on September 6th, 2020 at 03:39 AM
So the PSU of the MZ-80K has been reunited with the computer and it works. Monitor is clear and bright with no screen burn. The rest of the computer on the other hand is filthy. The keyboard keys are sticking and some of the graphic keys have labels under the plastic covers, obviously to represent a numeric keypad for some program.

Keyboard has now been stripped, this required desoldering of every keyswitch, but after that they pop out of the frame as easy as anything and the keytops

Further adventures of Multibus

by Gary C on August 19th, 2020 at 01:07 PM
Finally got my 286/10 processor running in my multibus rack.

I wire wrapped a iLBX bus between the CPU and memory cards but it wasn't starting on power up. In the end it wasn't getting a clean reset so I have now wired up a toggle switch to the Multibus master reset line and now it starts with a memory check (i think, it gives a row of 0 0 0) then the intel monitor program welcome message).

Next issue is software. Not sure if I will program it myself with a simple OS,
