About Mad-Mike
I'm a once "collector" of Vintage IBM Compatible hardware now gone retro-gamer/retro-computing enthusiast in what little free time I have available. The 486 era is my favorite and I tend to prefer stuff in the same style as the Compaq Deskpro 8086/286/386.
Sparks, NV
For the purpose of this site, 8088-80486 Era DOS/Wintel machines.

Long update....

by Mad-Mike on October 26th, 2020 at 03:28 PM
I have a second blog at blogger, but wondering if maybe I should stick to this one here....any thoughts? While blogger is easier I have a far longer legacy here at VCF than I do at blogger. Plus this feels more like something I"d use (and it works with my vintage computers).

So since the last post a long time ago....a lot has changed. I live in a different region, my collection was downsized and then regrown again (something about this keeps me coming back, even though it's

Thoughts on the Compaq Portable Screen Situation

by Mad-Mike on October 4th, 2016 at 11:21 AM
Well, one of my long running projects of about 3-4 years now is a Compaq Portable 486C that I became caretaker to. Well, it has a cracked screen, and I'm trying to find a replacement......meanwhile, after going to ETI Express, Impact computers, and about four or five other places over the years that seem to advertise parts they don't carry as on-sale for a nice price - I'm kind of at the point now where I'm starting to consider other options into the foray of fixing one of these things.

Stuff in the Works

by Mad-Mike on April 22nd, 2015 at 08:28 AM

- 486 DX2/66 now has it's thermal getup done. I took a chipset heatsink from a Sony Vaio Pentium 4, roughly used pliars to shorten the fins a little bit (to clear the XT drive cage), and created a nifty, almost-modern thermal system where the heatsink has a tiny, really fast fan that throws out a lot of air across them, and it just so happens the strongest air current is also aimed at the chipset for my S3 805 video card - creating a cohesive thermal system - who would

by Mad-Mike on March 10th, 2014 at 11:59 AM
Got 2 machines on the bench modern-ish, one retro......

My Wife's Dell Dimension 4600, which I'm rebuilding with Windows 7 x86 for her birthday with the new licence I purchased. SHe's had this computer since 2003, the darned thing just won't die, and with good's the list of issues it had at the start of the weekend....

- won't "rewind" on XFINITY or Netflix videos (locks up machine)
- grinding 20GB PATA HDD, I would lie awake

More updates on the 486......

by Mad-Mike on January 25th, 2013 at 03:50 PM
Right now is the big software push....every day for the past week, I've spent about 5-10 minutes a day shoving gigabytes upon gigabytes of data/software/enhancements/updates to the 486 from my main Windows 7 desktop. I've had one of my 2 1280X1024 screens crammed FULL of file-copy windows.

Man am I glad I put on that full duplex.

The longest push was the first because of some AVI files I had made in my DOS game folders on the Win7 box. It will be interesting to see
