About Mad-Mike
I'm a once "collector" of Vintage IBM Compatible hardware now gone retro-gamer/retro-computing enthusiast in what little free time I have available. The 486 era is my favorite and I tend to prefer stuff in the same style as the Compaq Deskpro 8086/286/386.

For the purpose of this site, 8088-80486 Era DOS/Wintel machines.

More Versa Work.....

by Mad-Mike on January 23rd, 2021 at 02:37 PM
Just got the Ultralite in, I got a REAL basketcase, lol. Rusty oscillator, looks like water damage, ticks when the battery is installed, no status on the LCD display, LCD panel thrashed but control boards good, AC Adapter is down for the count as well, and the plastic is cracked. When they said "for parts" they were not kidding. Managed to use a few parts to fix the M/75 I just got.

The M/75 was also a bit of a basketcase - overpaid. But the chassis on this one is flawless

Courier Woes - why I'm holding off on my rebuild/flip idea

by Mad-Mike on January 19th, 2021 at 11:01 AM
USPS up until now has been very reliable, so I'm a bit ticked off....

Ordered M/75 on the 8th, was "Out for Delivery" on the 15th, then turned up at a 6:41pm as "Ready for Pickup" at our Post Office. No slip, no note in the tracking - nothing. Weird since our regular carrier comes by as late as 9:10pm to deliver mail and parcels.

So I figure - since the message on E-bay AND USPS is "be patient, we are experiencing slowdown during these unprecedented

Laptop Plastic Repair - Superglue/Baking Soda Experiment

by Mad-Mike on January 11th, 2021 at 10:58 AM
Did about 5 hours of footage on Saturday of this little excusrion - I will post later once I've had time to edit.

Basically, repaired most of the damaged plastic on my NEC Versa P/75 case using baking soda and Superglue. I have heard of this for a long time and have been VERY skeptical about it, kind of funny since I have used this before in guitar repair to repair nut slots that are too low. It just seems that this solution seemed to "Mr. Ed" for me to believe.

40EC is charging again, 2021 Plans

by Mad-Mike on January 4th, 2021 at 12:49 PM
Fixed the NEC Versa 40EC power supply board, turns out I melted a wire between the secondary pack negative terminal on it's way to the circuitry. I replaced it with a thinner wire. The machine now charges and runs like normal. Just needs a new battery, and I located the company that made the battery for my P/75 & M/75 - they make a version for the Ultralite/E/V models as well, so I'll spend on that sometime down the road this year.

That said, I think 2021 is going to be a bit
