The Portable is really not that hard to service. You just have to pay attention and use some common sense.

For example, there is NO NEED to remove the plastic casing from the frame to remove any...

They are still by no means hard to find or expensive. A quick eBay search reveals that 10-packs can be had for as little as $11, and I do still see them in thrift stores too.

You could also just get some CD-RWs (as they can be had for almost nothing nowadays), and get some more software onto the Compaq. :)

Yeah, it is kind of a shame. Thankfully, I also have an Inspiron 4150 now, which is the Inspiron equivalent of the Latitude C640, so I can run 98 on that. :)

I mean with 256-colors. To my knowledge, the onboard video of the PS/2 only supports 16-colors, unless I missed something.

Interesting. I would have to see 768i for myself on the 8513 to determine if it was usable or not.

I did read somewhere that the 8514 adapter could do 640x480 with 256-colors. Guess that was a lie.

I would agree that the early Pentium 4s weren’t the greatest. I have one and Windows XP runs like shit on it. It’s pretty decent for anything Windows 2000 and below though. I love the newer P4s...
  10. IBM 8514 display adapter question

I have had this card for awhile now, and some places say it can support 640x480, while others say it doesn’t.

Which is true? I would like to use this card with my 8513 VGA monitor to get...

    ActionNote madness

The very first Windows 3.1 computer I ever owned was an Epson ActionNote 500C. I found it at a thrift store almost 10-years-ago. I was mesmerized by how old and primitive of a laptop it was, and...

Well, that didn’t fix it, and I tried some other things that didn’t help either. No more early Toshiba Laptops for me until someone figures out what’s up with them. I’ll stick with the gas plasma...

Has anyone ever figured out what’s up with these? I just got one of these, recapped it, and it’s still just giving me the blinking “DC-in” light. This is the THIRD vintage Toshiba laptop I have...

It won’t open any further than that? Very odd. You have all of the tabs undone, so it should come off. I’d suggest shining a flashlight in there and see if you can spot any that might be holding it.

    "New" camcorder

I have decided to move to a more modern format for videos, known as "VHS." No more of this "SD card" crap.

It doesn’t have anything to do with the drivers, it has to do with the bios and the type of display it sees. Even if you could adjust it, it wouldn’t really do much in the way of making the screen...

You’re welcome! My Dell Inspiron 8000 series laptops, and my Dell Precision M50 have a native resolution of 1600 x 1200, and it looks amazing. 1400 x 1050 is really good too.

Yours probably has the 1400 x 1050 screen then, as that was an option for the E500, and I’ve never seen an LCD that can go above its native resolution.
