I would bet there are some speculators buying up 3dfx cards in the hopes they will be worth more in a few years or decades (depending on how long you are willing to wait). It is just harder to control the market on mass produced gear like 3dfx cards then it is on rarities like a C65, Apple 1, Lisa, etc (and you need a sizable amount of cash to try).

I think we all would have much different collections if we had known which items would have been worth money 15+ years down the road instead of just buying what we liked or found for free.
    What I collect: 68K/Early PPC Mac, DOS/Win 3.1 era machines, Amiga/ST, C64/128
    Nubus/ISA/VLB/MCA/EISA cards of all types
Boxed apps and games for the above systems
Analog video capture cards/software and complete systems

I certainly would have invested $15k in that Apple 1 Craig Solomonson sold back in the 1990s.

I think you would have been better off with Apple stock. Exactly what do you get taxed on profit from selling collectables compared to the ultra low tax on capital gains.

I'm not a CPA but afaik collectibles is an allowed classification on schedule d, so it would be the same rate as any other capital gain.
