    You were right.

    I removed the capacitor group and measured it.

    4.8uF. should be ok, but eh. Let's try a couple old film caps, 250V rated, 2.7uF each. Together they came back at 5.2uF. stuck them in circuit.

    At arm's length, flipped the power switch..

    That works. They don't get hot, doing burn in test now.

    Perhaps one of the 50v rated ceramics was breaking down under load, given they are rated somewhat under the 100v.
    Perhaps I was just lucky the caps I used could handle 100v.

    Very possible. It took adjustment and worked well enough.

    It ran for 30 minutes without any signs (or smells) of distress.
