Default Shipping SNAFU: Local pickup, but no car

So, there's a person two hours downstate from me in central illinois selling a PC-XT with a load of bells and whistles at a good price, but there's a problem: They're local pickup only and i don't have a working car nor a way to borrow one. I've asked if they could do shipping at that short of a range, but i may need to pay someone to get it and bring it to me (potentially with some specimen from my collection as part of repayment) if i go for the sale. Any precautions i should follow? Anywhere i should look for hands if worst comes to worst?

If you are not along for the ride and payment don't bother.

P.S. why did you make a deal when you know you can't go get it?

Oh, i haven't yet, i'm just trying to figure out whether or not i can make things work. I prefer a "Act now, think later" approach to system acquisition but i'm not quite that impulsive.

There are small couriers that do this all the time. I've even heard rumours of Uber drivers doing this.

Very honestly I could buy a beater for that price and then sell it afterward. But renting isn't a bad option for someone who doesn't want to do that. I seem to recall that Home Depot's cargo van rental isn't terribly spensive, specially if you only need it for a few hours.
