Default Making FR4 Look Old, Without Dye!

The above is a new-made board, run at a modern board house using standard yellowish FR4 stock. The other side is blue solder mask! No Rit dye or other dubious chemical trickery. Plus, solder mask on the side you have to solder.

Why does it have water spotting?

Probably from the cleaning process at the board house. Prototype runs often come with residue from whatever they clean the boards with. I'm guessing the small prototype runs are machine-handled and don't get the attention that production runs do (e.g. the silkscreen is always far less good).

Either way, looks old! like something off my shelf.

now if only you could produce that old ripple/wavy effect of the solder/mask of the late 70's early 80's.. what was that called?

I think I know what you're referring to, and I'm pretty sure it's from solder surface finish being applied before the mask. They don't do that nowadays, both to save on surface treatment and because it seriously weakens solder mask adherence.
