Well done Monty. You are now the world expert at repairing Tektronix 405x equipment !

    Nice job though...

Many congrats indeed, Monty! That Vipers program is pretty impressive; does it run on the 4052 (presumably scaling down the resolution), and is there a listing somewhere?

Love the periphs too -- I've been looking for a few but no luck. Strangely, I found have a manual for the hardcopy unit along with my 4052 docs, which suggests it originally came with one. Looks like the HCU was scrapped/lost before the '52 went into storage.

Had a possibility at the time to pick up such a HCU, but didn't.
No big loss, as it uses completly unobtainium photgrapic paper.
It does sport a single line special CRT, which I would have loved to see.

Vipers program listing is in the emulator github programs folder.

I’m thinking about designing a GPIB FLASH DRIVE program storage accessory to our 4051/4052/54/52A/54A machines since the tapes are so problematic, and the MAXIPACK only works with the 4051.
And since not everyone has the backpack with serial option.

GPIB advantage is it is on all the 405x series and all the BASIC programs will support it without needing an option ROM.

My thought is to have the device respond to the 405x BASIC commands for the tape drive (TLIST, FIND, OLD, SAVE, MARK, etc).

Someone on the web has a 5V Arduino Uno board directly connected to a GPIB connector - that works as a GPIB controller.

However - the Tek 405x is the controller and cannot be used as the device.

I have all the Tektronix 405x GPIB manuals - that include HW and 6800 assembler code for the tape interface with flowcharts for the logic.

There are also Arduino shields with MicroSD flash cards and libraries for the FAT and FAT32 file systems.

I started a separate thread to discuss my idea for a GPIB device for the Tektronix 4051, 4052/4052A and 4054/4054A computers to save and restore files:

I just repaired my Tektronix 4054A computer - again.

I had only replaced one of two big Sprague 420UF 200VDC electrolytic capacitors on the +5V switching power supply, and a couple of weeks ago my 4054 locked up and all the front panel lights were on.

Power cycling didn't change anything - so I took out the +5V power supply this morning, disassembled to get to the main board and sure enough the other capacitor was only showing 5UF instead of 420UF on my fluke multimeter.

I used solder wick to remove the solder from the pads - and replaced the defective capacitor with another NOS exact replacement, plugged it back into my 4054A and it powered up just fine!

Now I can continue my 4052A/4054A Assembler experiments.

I guess 18 months of use on a 40 year old vintage Tektronix 4054A is pretty good - before another issue

A couple of months ago, my 4054A failed to clear the screen after I turned it on and pressed the PAGE key. No problem, I just switched to my working 4052

I used the latest 4054/4054A service manuals and narrowed the issue to a 74123 dual one-shot on the Display Board.

Since the other one-shot appeared to work, I decided to replace the 74123 - and voila - my 4054A was then able to clear the screen!

I needed my 4054A to work to test Jos' latest 4052/4054 Multi-function ROM Module - see his vcfed thread:

    http://www.vcfed.org/forum/showthrea...979#post619979

Jos' MFM emulates the very rare 4050E01 4051/4052/4054 ROM Expander and has eight ROM slots - although his first board is only supported in a 4052/4054 as he doesn't have a 4051 to test the different ROMs needed.

I'll post an update with my test results in Jos' thread when I receive his MFM.

A friend of mine has a 4051... And I have build two of these MFM units.
So if the hardware is the same he might be able to do some tests on the 4051...?

    Roland,

As I understand the ROM Expander and MFM design - yes with qualifications that Jos listed in his thread.

    1. 4051 ROM images only
    2. RTC and Printer Serial hardware and their ROMs are only for 4052

I would post your questions on Jos' thread for his MFM to see if there are any other potential issues.

Jos will be able to tell you what starting address to use for each 4051 ROM.

The 4051 ROM Packs I captured and posted here:
    https://github.com/mmcgraw74/Tektron..._Pack_Firmware

    include:

    • Binary Program Loader
      Editor
      Matrix Functions
      4051 RS232-Printer Interface

But I had no way to test these images.

The 4051 RS-232 Printer Interface looks similar to the 4051 RS-232 Printer Interface board, but the schematics in the 4051 and 4052 service manuals need to be checked out.

No Roland, the select signal for the bankswitchregister is totaly different. That needs to be acounted for. I'll contact you per PM.

Monty, postoffice performance these days is a bad joke, even without errors from the frontlinestaff ( first time around the postoffice lady corrected some mistake of mine, and then proceeded to select United Arab Emirates instead of United States of America in the drop down list, one line above, I did not notice, the Swiss post' tracking system did not show destination. Resulting in some 8 weeks before the package returned, sporting some arabic that probably means "incorrect addres..")

I hate shipping these days..and don't mention Ebay's shipping program.

    Jos
