I would cut the chips out carefully and remove the pins with an iron and tweezers, then cleaning the holes with braid or a solder sucker as needed. I also add solder before trying to braid or suck old solder as the fresh solder and flux helps the old solder flow and be removed.

I'd invest in dual wipe, or machined sockets. Better to put in the best quality sockets if you are going to do that much work.
Point taken. I actually have one of these cheap $99 deals and surprisingly it works really well! https://www.ebay.com/itm/323286980159

You can get 4164's here: http://www.unicornelectronics.com/IC/DYNAMIC.html, or from Jameco (https://www.jameco.com/z/4164-150-Ma...0NS_41662.html - over 800 in stock and $1 less than Unicorn).

Thanks, I will be in the SF area on Friday for the Vintage Computer Fest West. Jamaica is nearby so I can pick them up (and some decent sockets too) in person.

It is the one where iPhones can spell accurately and computers can be relied upon to drive cars without smashing headlong into any building with mirrored glass.

I typed Jameco, Apple did the rest.

Then you'd need a multiplexer too to use all available 64k banks.

Problem is, the moment you switch (64k) banks the C64 will crash because the stack contents and your current program (if in RAM) mysteriously vanish
