    I get the fact it has an acoustic coupler, but what the hell is this thing?

    Specialized terminal--you set the parameters of whatever it was you were trying to do on the thumbwheel switches, then called a corporate computer center, where it would convey the (numeric) data.

    Here's a description of an insurance company using them.

    There were variations of the thing, including one that incorporated a thermal printer. If it was cheap enough, it might be worth the Samsonite case.

    Crazy. I like under the "condition" description it says "Could Not Connect to Server of any sort."
