    It is convenient to finish the backup before starting to use the system again and vital to have a backup that is faster than the rate of new files being added.

    I switched over a long time ago to using a Network Attached Storage Device after I had a 250GB Hard Drive Crash on me about 10 years ago that ended up costing me $750.00 to have a Clean Room Data Recovery done on to retrieve my Data.

    Can't say that I've found 3.5" HDDs to be problematic. But, anectodally, some years ago when HP started to introduce 2.5" HDDs for their big servers, we (that is, at work) observed a *lot* more disk failures on the servers with 2.5" disks than the basically same servers with 3.5" disks. This would be full-hight rack-mounted servers with rows and rows of disks mounted vertically.
    But this may have improved since then. It seems (again, anectodally) that we have fewer disk issues now, some years later.
