Really? Loose working boards without cases are common?

Youstaby. Not sure if they still are. But at one point, Commodore was apparently selling off its stock of upgrade universal boards and everyone with an 8k PET was swapping boards.

I have seen PET 2001 with 320008 PCB go for about euro 300 including shipping. Complete units, with original tape drive and keyboard. Just for reference.
I don't know when CBM started to manufacture the alternate PCBs for the "static" 2001 (my 2001N is surely from 1979, but that's the dynamic board). For alternate PCBs I mean the variants with 2316 ROMs and/or 2114 SRAMs. My 2001-8 has chips datecodes into the second half of 1978, so that's when it was made probably.
Are the different static boards all contemporary? Anyone?

MPS6540 ROMs are 28 pin DIP, 600 mils.
2316 ROMs are 24 pin DIP, 600 mils.

As a data point, both my 2001-8s have 6540s and 6550s; at least over here those were by far the most common versions in my experience. FWIW, the latest date codes on the TTL chips are in the 7830 range.
