Thread: CBM 8050 disk drive not working

  1. #1

Question CBM 8050 disk drive not working

    Hello everyone!

I found a CBM 8050 disk drive in the basement and connected it to my MMF9000.

Whenever I try to load or save something, the main LED turns red and the drive does nothing.

So, there must be something wrong with the mechanics.

    But what?

    Thanks in advance,

    ZapdoZ

I wouldn't assume anything without checking the error status.

    10 OPEN1,8,15,"I0"
    20 INPUT#1,E,E$,T,S
    30 ?E;E$;T;S
    40 CLOSE1

insert a correctly formatted disk into unit 0 and RUN
    change I0 with I1
move the correctly formatted disk into unit 1 and RUN
    Report what's the output.
You don't give enough informations to understand what might be wrong.

    Default A good cleaning

My experience with these units is never underestimate a good cleaning.

I had one that showed a red (Main) LED with drive 0 not responding. I tried the "knocking program" to bump the heads as the unit was SUPER clean.

However a clean and lube of the rails and good head cleaning did the trick. I repeat this unit was clean and I had zero hopes a cleaning would do the trick, but it sure did!

So when I try to load something (load "$",8,1) it says file not found and the front LED turns red.

    10 OPEN1,8,15,"I0"
    20 INPUT#1,E,E$,T,S
    30 ?E;E$;T;S
    40 CLOSE1

This script just gave me a syntax error in 10

Im now going to clean the drive

weird, it should work in both basic2 and basic4, you must have made a typo.

    You've typed something incorrectly.

Just do this when the red light is on. Really, get an error message before doing any work on it. Else you might compound the problem and not even know it.

    Code:
    10 OPEN1,8,15
    20 INPUT#1,E,E$,T,S
    30 ?E;E$;T;S
    40 CLOSE1

    now,
    change the line 10 to
    10 open1,8,15,"i0"

like I wrote on my first answer and let us know what it prints. It needs a good formatted disk on drive 0.
If you change the command to "i1" it needs a good formatted disk on drive 1.

It says 0 0 0 again. The main drive LED flashes red for like 0.5 seconds, then it turns green again. The drive doesnt make any sounds at all.
