Default Model 4 Character ROM Versions

I've just finished reading two 8044316A IC's from two Model 4 Sockets marked U21. IC's are marked:
    Code:
    TANDY 81 TANDY 81
    QQ8309 QQ8341
Both are Identical and they are NOT the International Version 8049007.u103. I have the Bit Mapped Font for u103 that Alan Posted on a different posting.

The Model 3 Version 8044316a.u36 (version from mess) is different from this .u21 version and from the u.103 (International Version).

My goal is to get the updated Bit Mapped Font done for this US Version Char ROM, in the next few weeks.

I also created a document of how I read the ROM with details of what the wiring is, and the commands to use.

    My Model 4 Char ROM
    Tandy 81
    QQ8341 & QQ8309

Your dump of your 8044316A looks identical to the MESS 8044316A dump to me (CRC 444c8b60). What difference are you seeing? What's the CRC of the 8044316A dump that you thought you got from MESS?

Thanks for noting that one of your chips is dated 8341. That's later than the latest I'd heard of, and narrows down the date of the 8044316A-to-8049007 transition to sometime between October 10th and December 4th of 1983.

Here's a table of information about the TRS-80 Model III/4 character generators:
    Code:
Type Datecodes Tandy Label Mfg. label (C) CRC Notes
       CG3 8029-8039 8044316 SCM91665P none 1765931e
       CG3 8042-8105 8044316 SCM91665P C80 1765931e (belated addition of a copyright notice)
       CG3 8126-8341 8044316A Motorola C81 444c8b60 only changes are in Katakana
CG3 8237 8049000 SCM90888P C82 ce405683 Used only in Europe. Katakana dropped. Bottom quarters swapped
       CG3 8348-8447 8049007 SCM95987P C83 1ac44bea New chars 0-31. A few changes in high chars. Bottom unswapped.
You can find dumps and renderings of them all in my TRS-80 ROMs directory on Google drive. Here's the README there:

The 8049000 ROM (used only in Europe) swapped the two lower quarters of the font. It therefore looks very different when comparing the renderings. I included a "swapped" rendering of that font (with the lower two quarters swapped) so that you can more easily find which characters in it are new.

If you open 8044316A, 8049000-swapped, and 8049007 in three tabs and view them in that chronological order, you can see there was an orderly evolution, other than the swapping.

    Alan,
The files are identical. That's the problem with not being able to edit previous postings. Plus I forgot to go back and read the first posting.

I originally thought they were different because my spreadsheet had a couple of errors in the "," and another character. But, as I was
creating the .U21 BMP file, and comparing that to my excel spreadsheet I figured out they were the same. But, I was tired at that
point and I forgot to re-read my original posting.

Anyway my Model 4 was a 16K Cassette system and was one of the last Cassette units that was sold at Radio Shack in Cape Girardeau.
I upgraded it to a 2 Disk system with RS-232C and 128K. It has worked well over the years.

    Sorry for the confusion.

    Larry
