1. ## Slow News Day

On Bill Hemmer's and Sandra Smith's segment on Fox News this morning, this was a topic:

How to do 8 ÷ 2(2+2). Scholars were sent reeling. If it was left up to me in order to save the human race, I would say "16". However, there are those who profess "1".

I was taught to solve this type of equation left to right; i.e., 8 divided by 2 equals 4 times 2 plus 2, or 16. Some say 2 times 2 plus 2 equals 8 divided into 8 equals 1.

Go figure!

2. You're kidding, right?

3. Wow. Algebraic operator precedence 101, with () taking precedence above multiply and divide. This is middle school prealgebra material.

4. Is this that common core nonsense? I've had multiple intelligent friends tell me that they found themselves on YouTube trying to help their 10 year olds with their math homework because common core didn't make any sense to them.

The individual who taught you that should have never been hired as a teacher!

The bottom line is to avoid FOX News.

Well, what's you solution? Lots of people go with the above (16).

It's not my solution... it's the correct solution. And it's 1.

C'mon this is math, not politics!

There is only one right answer.
