Thread: IBM PS/2 Model 9577 MCA Memory Card

Default IBM PS/2 Model 9577 MCA Memory Card

    Hey All,
Just curious if anyone has added memory above 32MB in a Model 77 486DX2? If so, what MCA card was used?

    Thanks

The 9577 has two 72 pin SIMM slots which will be much faster than an MCA expansion. While I can't say I've used an MCA memory card to go over 32mb (best was 16mb on a 70/386) I'm curious what exactly you are running that's going to need more than that on a 486.

Yep, I had the same question as well. Never had much use for >32MB in a 486 unless I was trying to run one of the later versions of Win95 (B,C). Even then it was hard to tell much difference...

I thought I might see if it could nudge it into the Windows 98 Realm, just for fun. But, it sounds like more trouble than its worth.

Windows 98 minimum requirement is 16 mb, 32 mb is fine for Windows 98.

Win98 is pretty much a slug on a 486. Already tried (and reverted back to Win95). MS "minimum" requirements are a 486-66/16MB and realistic minimum is a P120/64MB.

I never said it would run fast lol.

That being said, a fast 486 like an Am5x86-133 is *OK* running Windows 98, just don't expect to be able to heavily multitask or run multimedia stuff well.

A better suggestion might be an nLighted version of Win2k. Cut a copy to install on a 486DX4-100/64MB. Usable, as long as I don't push it too hard.

Win95a (no internet explorer) ran fine on a fast 486 with 16mb+ of RAM but it would be a bit limited.
