Thread: 22disk with 8" drive on PC

  1. #1

Default 22disk with 8" drive on PC

I've got a working imagedisk system running with an 8" drive and adaptec 1522CF controller which can r/w SSSD disks.
    AMD K5 PC.

Trying to 22disk V1.42? to read regular SSSD disks but error says
sector not found, cyl 2, side 0, sector 1 (the first sector of directory)

    I'm using definition A1
and have tried changing the definition from FM,HIGH to FM,LOW
    but not glory.

    Any ideas?

If it's an 8", it will be FM, HIGH.

Have you tried formatting an A1 disk and putting some files on it and then seeing if you can read it back?

Also, how do you know that the disk you're trying to read is A1 format?

I wrote this disk using this very system and the IMAGEDISK program. SSSD, 77 trks, 26 sectors, 128 b/sec, 1 side.
And I have other disks with the same format.
I can read all of them in my XEROX 820II.

What does your DISKETTE.CFG file look like?

A1 format has been working with 22Disk since 1987. It works today with 22Disk 1.45.

I don't see a diskette.cfg file, maybe it installed that in another dir.

    VIEWCONF gives me

    A: 1.44m, bios 0, port 3f0h, unit 0, dma 2, int 6, seek 6, special CH, p 0
    A: 360k, bios 1, port 3f0h, unit 1, dma 2, int 6, seek 6, p 0

You can write a skeleton file using "VIEWCONF /F" and then edit it to fit your configuration.

Ok I did that and it did write a diskette.cfg file with the info above.

    Same result when I
    CDIR /a1 b:

I might be doing something real basic wrong

    Try a simple DISKETTE.CFG

    X: 8INCH BIOS 1 PORT 03F0H UNIT 1 DMA 2 INT 6 SEEK 8

Assuming that your 8" drive is in the second position

    CDIR /A1 X:

    Should do it for you.

I deleted the install and tried again.
    Now I'm stuck at
    File not found - READ.ME!
    Copying files did not work....etc

    READ.ME is clearly on A:
    Tried 8 times.
Not sure what's going on now.
    Gonna call it a night

Ok, I don't know why the new files won't install now,
but I created a diskette.cfg like you said
and did the cdir with same results

    GENERIC CPM SSSD 8"
Error reading disk on cyl 2, side 0, sector 1.

Nothing is easy for me, so I'm use to that.
Spent 2 weeks just getting an imagedisk system to work.
Half of that time was battling the quirk of imagedisk having to run from an HD
The other was a bad 7404 on the Shugart.
