Thread: Sun optical mousepad (anyone have a digital scan ?)

  1. #1

Default Sun optical mousepad (anyone have a digital scan ?)

I have a SPARCserver 20 with keyboard and mouse but not the optical grid mousepad.
Does anyone, or can anyone make, a scan of one of those mousepads ?

    Thanks!

    Stefan.

Carr engineering has something that works. Hacky, but it works.

1 Print PDF to a transparency sheet
    2 Put tinfoil on backside
    3 working reflective mousepad!

I have a Sun optical mousepad, though I don't know which version (or even whether there were different versions). Remarkably, I even know exactly where it is - on top of a printer at my big shop. I should be over there in a couple of days and will try to remember to grab it. Not sure how easy it will be to get a useful scan or photo of it, but I'm willing to have a go.

Please feel free to message me with a reminder, if I haven't followed up on this by the end of the week.

Stefan, hier een scan @ 1200 DPI :

    ftp://ftp.dreesen.ch/SUN_mouse_pad.pdf

My scanner has difficulties scanning this, and the pad was not in great condition, still needs to be cropped, but there you go.

It is still an excellent mousepad for current optical mice.

There are two versions, at least that I've seen: the older Mouse Systems model with two optical sensors, one which lights up red, and the later kind that have one sensor. The older one wants a two-color mousepad (lines are blue and black), the single-sensor one wants a mousepad with black lines only. They're not interchangeable and both mice will act strangely if paired with the wrong mousepad.

It seems like it also wanted a 3D effect.

I bought a Sun aluminium mouse pad off Oz eBay. The seller failed to pack it properly with cardboard in a thin box but instead just put it straight into an unpadded business envelope. And neglected to write 'DO NOT BEND' or 'FRAGILE' on it.
When our postie delivered it, he folded it like a magazine to get it in the letterbox slot ...not his fault though.

There were several different versions of these mousepads.
One difference was rigid aluminum base vs flexible rubber mat.
There was also 3 different lpi for the grid.
Already mentioned was different optical wavelength used.
Why do I know so much? I had MSC (Mouse Systems) make a version for the Amiga computer around 1987-88. I have a couple left over, still in the box. I have some extra mouse pads as well. I'm not sure what the cost would be to mail to the Netherlands.
