Default wtb: 6th/7th gen lga1151 cpu

Skylake/Kaby Lake. For a z170 mobo. Probably not looking for an i5 or i7. Something on the cheaper side to test a mobo.

I have an Asus Z170 mobo with an I7-6700K which was my main box and gamer until I did a new build back last fall. A quick check on eBay and I7 prices are outrageous. There is an I5-6600K for $71 - not bad and with the 'K' version you can overclock it fairly well. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-...kAAOSwtANeqdww

Yeah just keep watching ebay I got one for $100 guy wanted 150 I offered 100 he
took it plus it came with 8GB of memory..
Forgot to say it was with motherboard and cheap video card he stated it needed
the card because this i7 does not support onboard video..
But it does every thing I need it for..

    https://www.amazon.com/Supermicro-DD.../dp/B01ARONDD4

This thing was sold for parts no workee. I want to spend the minimal amount possible until I know where I stand. Hence not interested in an i series chip. Celeron/pentium.

It does kind of stink procuring pieces for a slightly older platform. 8th/9th gen chip are plentiful new and reasonable.

(I neitjer bougjt it from Amazon or paid 1/20th of that price. Just showing what it looks like).

Well maybe, but the chip itself will have something to say about that.

Okay - to some degree. Non 'K' chips have locked multipliers, so what your mobo is capable of doing is to increase the front side bus frequency to some degree. You'll get some joy but don't expect that big honker.

Supermicro hacked the bios. Whole nudda ballgame. By 8th generation Intel unhacked what they hacked so to speak. But on 6th/7th gen processors the results are more then mediocre I understand. Other boards by different manufacturers can produce impressive results with lower end i3 chips we're told.
