Just a gentle reminder ...

It is bad netiquette to have a gigantic .sig or a .sig that is composed of multiple links. Some of the .sigs used here are getting outrageous, and it's time to tone them down - this isn't an arms race.

On Usenet many many years ago people got obnoxious with their .sigs and the term 'McQuary Limit' was coined. (See 'McQuary Limit' for details. AHM pointed that gem out to me.) Simply stated, a .sig should be no more than 4 lines long and each line should be 80 characters or less. The McQuary Limit shows it's age - it was invented for Usenet, long before the web, but the spirit is still reasonable.

For those of you with the larger .sigs, please make an effort to tone it down a bit. Some guidelines:

  • A web link or two is fine .. anything more (especially to the same related resources) is overkill.
  • A small picture is fine ...

If your .sig is multiple times longer than your normal posts, it's gotten out of control. Show some modesty. ;-0
