Received some issues of the TRS-80 newsletter and Softside yesterday. Then today I received an OSI Challenger 2P with monitor, lots of software and even better, lots and lots of documentation, newsletters and books. Now the fun of sorting through all of it and checking out the system begins.

Very cool, David!

Those OSI systems are nice!

I've got a new (as of yesterday) Heathkit H11 on the Variac right now. Dual 8" drives, docs, software, etc.

Fun stuff! :D

Ok now I'm REALLY jealous!! :)

My uncle had an H11 back when they came out but his ex took it when they split up and trashed it shortly later. Wish I had it these days.

i wish i had access to one of those things, My TRS-80s need new powersupply boards because its been so long since i fired them up. The other day i tried them out and POP! Some rectangular shaped Cap blew ( the same cap on both systems even) My Commodore 1702 Monitor luckly faired better. I'd be really mad if it died on me.

I just got thru bringing-up a CBM 8032 (couple dayz ago), and the ol' Model III (Fired 'er up this a.m.). Someone (usually a reliable source) recently informed me that using a variac on some types of switching power supplies may actually damage them irreparably, but since I've never had a problem yet, I think I'll just continue with what seems to be working for me.

Oh, BTW, congrats on scoring the Challenger.

dlw. just checked out your site. nice collection

OT: heres some info on the Game Gear
CPU: enhanced Z-80 with a strange 12-bit mode as well as the standard 8-bit mode

Also, the Hardware on the Game Gear is so close to the sega Master, its can run the Masters games with an adaptor

I noticed your having trouble getting your Master system to detect a cart. Mostly the problem is the cart, the system, or both are dirty. Try to find a cleaning kit. Mine had the same issue and a good cart slot cleaning got it running like new.

Z-80 fans can certainly be proud of the formidable old 8-bit cpu and use the Sega Master System and the Game Gear as examples of what the old chip can do. The Game Gear's enhanced mode was rarely used, so most of what you see it do in most games is in standard mode. As far as a screen replacement, you can find junk Game Gears fairly easy. Alot of the Game Gears had a hard life at the hands of some little kid who was better off with a Game Boy.

Not disputing your info - I used to think Game Gear was a
16bitter, but anyway - as long as your source is correct, then
that's the main thing. As I said elsewhere - I was so close
to getting a Game Gear, my main concern was the number of
games I could get for it. It seemed to be quite limited here
in Australia. It was also an expensive console - but really
made up for this Colour screen (& what I thought at the time
was a 16bit - but anyway). Perhaps it's the enhanced mode
which had me thinking this. Are there any known source of
games which used this Enhanced mode?

Panzer Dragoon Mini, Virtual Fighter Mini( i think that was its title) Jungle Strike, And Sonic Chaos( though Chaos didn't use it at all times) used the enhanced mode. I think there was another Sonic Game that did use the mode full time, i forgot its name though ( i had it on an emulator on my Pocket PC, which my friends dog thought was a chew toy  )

Even in its standard Mode, the Game Gear displayed very impressive graphics, it was quite easy to mistake it for a 16 bit system. Also there were about 350 games overall made over the Game Gears Lifespan ( 1989-1994). Despite popular lore, the Game Gear WASN'T a flop, it sold quite well. Its simply overshadowed by the Game Boy, which had an unusually long lifespan, rivaled only by the Atari 2600.

So if you want to call the GG a flop because of THAT, then the NES, SNES, Genesis,PSX, etc were Flops :p

No, sorry I didn't mean it was some kind of a flop - because
the computer mags indicated that there were quite a few games
made for it. A could I vagerly remember which I think were
made for the Game Gear was Pacland & one of the Wonderboy
games.

At the time though, I was living up in the bush & the only
place which sold the Game Gear & games was the K Mart on the
other side of town. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to have
many games for it & the console was expensive $199 AUD (for
someone on mimimum pay).

I really would of been interested to get the Game Gear if I
could have got those games for it - but it didn't seem to
eventuate.

wasn't saying you were calling it a flop, just that normally gets brought up so it was kind of a premptive response in case someone was to bring it up.:)
