what did you use to create this forum?

Im setting up a forum for a travel site Im doing, and Im looking for something thats 1/ free 2/ not too obtrusive ads 3/ easy for me to set up with very basic HTML knowledge 4/ easy to computer newbies to us

This forum runs with PHPBB which is a free forum product.

My web hosting provider (lunarpages) provides this as part of their basic hosting package.

When this board becomes a bit more popular I will spring for vBulletin which is a more robust product, but costs over $100.

Both install and manage pretty easily, but both require a host with PHP and MySQL support.

Let me know if you need any help!

I thought the one you're using here was pretty good & since
it's "free", that makes it even better! :)

My only consern is writing text while having to be online,
but my little thread I started is just some tips for
responding while being off-line.

Cheers.

Ouch, then I guess this forum must be in full swing with it's
over $100 board program! ;-)

So I guess you've got some big kick 'butt forum as well?

Still the old PHPBB forum here had some nice things about it,
but this is nice as well! :))

I think mr. asteroid wants something he dont even have to pay hosting on.
Here is proboards. http://www.proboards.com/index.html
They have the best free forums.
Good for newbs, and only one ad, which looks nice.
I started with these, but now all of mine are paid AD FREE hosting, and I use IPB, which isnt free anymore, but when I downloaded it, it was.
But if you plan on paying for good hosting, phpBB is the best considering how much ipb is now.
BTW, thanks Erik for keeping this site ad free.

VB is the way to go. You can spend a lot more than $100 on pain killers after sword fighting with the free stuff.

Mine is at vb.taylorcraft.org

What he said.

Seriously, the free stuff works for certain things but eventually most boards grow out of it in some way.

I'm glad we made the switch. I hope everyone else has settled into the new software and is enjoying it as much as I am!

Damn, there I go hijacking threads again.

Sorry.

I have been experimenting with several myself on my own server. So far it has been phpBB and PunBB.

Obviously, pbpBB is the most common forum software on the net, and is the most basic and most widely used.

PunBB, on the other hand, doesnt seem to have quite the following that phpBB has, but it seems to have a lot of the same features that make vBulletin so nice.

These are both free forum software, and I am just experimenting.

For those who want to see a punbb forum, here is a link to my test forum: http://www.tc-online.us/punbb/upload.

However, I do agree that vBulletin is the best forum software out there, and is worth the money if the expense is in your budget (its certainly not in mine lol).

Among free and open source software, phpBB tops my list. Fairly good product, huge MOD database, and pretty good support.

If you haven't got much time, and want to see what the new phpbb3 can offer, just try it out on this host : create forum

Hope this can help!
