Every once in a while things seem to work out. I have a sunroom, 10' x 16' with an attached deck at the rear of the house, and we spend a considerable amount of time there. About a year ago, last November, I bought a new tv for the sunroom, a 41" Vizio smart unit. The tv had excellent picture quality and the built-in wi-fi was a plus. Somewhere along the line the Vizio did an 'update' and for a while everything seemed okay except when I went to 'closed caption', which now appears to microscopic. There were apps to change the font, style, and size but none of this worked.

One day as I was shopping in the local Costco store, I stopped by the office and explained to one of the managers what happened. The tv had a 1 year manufacturer's warranty and the store always adds an extra year. The manager said that because over 90 days had elapsed, I would have to deal with Vizio, and they provided the phone number. I went through all of the levels and finally was able to talk to someone in engineering. I explained that the set works really well with the exception that the closed captioning was AFU, and also that the set would turn itself on and off at random times. Further, if I happened to be streaming, it would suddenly jump to off-air. The tech guy said they would schedule a local tv repairman and they would call me for a convenient time.

The repairman arrived with his tools and 2 cardboard boxes which were the new tuner and mainboard. He had the set apart in minutes, installed the new boards, and the set worked perfectly. He said "we need to due an update" and upon completion the closed caption was very small again. He then called Vizio and told them that it could not repair the set because of a faulty update, packed up and left.

From here on out it bordered on bazaar. Vizio assured me that they would standby the product and "not to worry". The first offer was to replace the set. I tried to explain that the tv was probably okay and the the download was faulty. The Vizio lision rep couldn't believe that their engineering folks would send out a bad firmware package and it absolutely had to be something in the tv. He further said that they would ship a "refurbished" set and I said no way, and that I didn't want someone else's problem child. We went around and around about that point and he countered with "how about we just refund you the store's wholesale price". I said that was out too. So, as it turned out, Vizio sent a NIB and I dropped the original into the shipping box and they had UPS pick it up at the house. The new set worked perfectly until the update and then I had the original bad closed caption feature.

I had a good inside number with "Ben's" extension, and he seemed to be right on top of things. He wanted me to run the tv for 4 or 6 weeks to see if another download would fix the problem. I told him that was okay with me and that's the road we took. Somewhere along the way "Ben" disappeared and no new download ever seemed to be forthcoming.

Cut to last Wednesday. I had all of my receipts and email correspondence as well as the Costco "consigliere" case number with me as I went to the Costco office searching for the store manager. After as short wait, I found him, and he seemed to be a very knowledgeable and pleasant fellow. I briefed him on what had transpired since the original purchase date and made mention that my previous encounter with the Costco store people was just a handoff to Vizio. He said that it was all bs and uncalled for. He told me to go home, grab that tv, bring it back to the store, then get a full instore purchase card for the full price that I paid.

So, I arrived at the store and no less than 3 manager types met me and escorted me through their tv inventory. I wound up with a 43" Roku which actually had a smaller footprint than the 41" Vizio. I can't say enough about the service - I really didn't expect this sort of outcome or the decent way that I was treated. Bottom line is I'm okay with my local Costco.

Costco is awesome! Not the first time I've heard of them taking care of people. Back in the day I bought a 2x CD burner from them. It failed before the end of the 1-year warranty. They gave me my money back and I was able to buy a 6x drive for the same money.

If there is a way to disable updates, I would strongly recommend it, unless an update fixes an issue you need fixed...or you can't turn it off and still access streaming content. We have a big 75" or so Sony 4k TV in the conference room at work. When it was new it worked great at 4k60p via a DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 adapter. At some point it stopped functioning at 60p, so it only works at 30hz at 4k, which makes the mouse cursor laggy. I messed and messed and messed with it and finally gave up. I'm pretty sure a firmware update somewhere along the way screwed it up. It is actually running Android in the background.

Never dealt w/Costco. Ordered a laptop from BJ's through the mail, all went well. Sam's Club is a viper's nest. Don't get sucked into one of their sales, a holiday sale in particular.

I regularly watch a Sylvania 19" flat screen crt tv. No plans to upgrade (it's not even mine, but I did find a 14" Toshiba flat crt w/dvd next door). Both are in surprisingly good shape. Not upgrading to a "smart" tv, as my IQ seemingly will plummet accordingly. It can't go much lower.

Oh, want to plug a product. I was a vegetarian for a number of years but gave it up due to demands on my time, and availability of meals. Well over the past few weeks I bought a few vegetarian items and threw them in the freezer. One of them being these "plant based" little hockey pucks/burgers from Target. And honestly I was expecting them to taste like it. I used to eat the Morning Star Grillers years ago, and to my surprise these were better then I remembered them. I won't tell you they were just like hamburger, in taste, but especially consistency. I hate when idiots LIE and say it's just like (?). But these were quite interesting. And this is from the perspective of eating them on a plate with only ketchup. I was quite surprised. I know there's other stuff out there, even "ground beef", "bloody" even, in packages. Wow, will that ever enhance my dining experience now that they've made the stuff to look like it was just hacked off the cow. Whatever. But I will be buying more of the stuff. Dining out in New Jersey has become an increasingly dismal affair. May as well eat at home.

If you are still on cable or just do OTA then it's no problem. But, if like many of us who are now streaming, smart TVs can make a big difference. With the smart TV you can eliminate the Roku, Apple TV, or what ever external box. It's nice to have it all integrated.

I miss having a Costco membership. I loved their Meat/seafood Selection. I guess I am one of the few Americans who enjoys Lamb, but they had fantastic legs of Lamb and Rack of Lamb, as well as big bags of Mussels and Clams. You can throw a pretty nice dinner party with the meat selections from Costco. Wife didn't want to renew a couple years back.....

And I hate shopping, so buying huge 2 gallon tubs of laundry detergent is !

But it was really good of the managers to help you out. Shame thats so uncommon these days. IT doesnt not cost them anything really as they will receive credit and they maintain a happy customer who has already gone out and "spread the good word" ensuring new sales by word of mouth. I dont understand how business today really dont understand customer service and have let it fade to the pages of history.

Question: since it seems without a doubt that the firmware is the problem why not just turn off updates? (If you can on a Vizio).

I hate smart TVs. I want my TV to do one thing: display pictures. If it needs to get smarter I will provide additional components. Plus now your smart TV gets to send you ads while you are switching channels. Seems like we keep going backwards...

After the update the "damage" is already done. Also, on that model Vizio, the update is mandatory.

You and me are at opposite ends on this; for me less is more. Also, to can opt out of all that other ad business somewhere in your setup.

Yes, but he got a brand NEW TV after the update killed the replacement boards on his old TV which did not have the problem. I would have turned off updates at that point.

Which is why Smart TVs are just a dumb ass idea by the manufacturers to show you more ads from Google.... I actually setup my own DNS w/ piHole because of that exact reason.

I do LOVE me a tower of components LOL! Nothing like stacks of equipment behind smoked glass... Sigh I miss the 80s....

I have never seen an option to let you opt out of seeing ads just customized ads (and I don't know if I believe that either) maybe I am missing something?

I'm referring to the initial setup of the TV. On both, my previous Vizio, and this Roku Hisense, there was an option about this or that advertising. I'm not sure I understand what to are seeing in the way of ads when changing channels. May not be a fault of the TV, but maybe your cable/streaming provider? BTW, do have OTA?

Article. Note that the cure is to get rid of updates for the apps. However, many of the apps are updated as part of firmware updates and can not be rolled back. Plus this only works on older sets that did not have the apps w/ ads as the primary/factory version.

OTA/Cable/etc. has nothing to do with it. These are built into the TV's interface.

Yeah, I hear you on that. I haven't experienced what you're seeing as of yet. Might want do some Googling on that or get ahold of someone in customer service, as I don't think it's normal that you have to put up with ads changing channels. So, how everything in LA these days? We're "medically" up to date and hopefully heading down to Florida next Thursday. Trying to find a deal on 3080 or 3090 but would have better luck on a gold brick for about the same price. This ought to be a good lesson for the American auto business - don't rely on the offshore chip supply.

LA is actually opening up. We are up to 50% for indoor stuff. In our little town (within LA County) apparently 52% are fully vaccinated. Traffic has certainly picked up and is almost back to 2019 levels. Maybe not quite as bad because kids are not fully back to school yet but its not the "open road" anymore.I think I will wait until the 3xxx are vintage before trying to pick one up. Honestly, I think my last modern system purchase was in 2007/2008 and I never fully finished the build LOL. Sigh... More toys then time.... and time runs out.

I'd just rather drag an Apple TV back to the store if it's broken than my drive-in-theater size TV. Just seems to me that the "smart" features of the TV are the most problematic, susceptible to random "Quality of life" and "feature" updates from the app owners, etc.

I'd simply rather have them disassociated. If I tire of my Apple TV, I can plug in something else until I tire of that. The little black streamer boxes I consider disposable in contrast to the "long term" "durable good" of a TV that's bolted to the wall.

My TV is, technically, a "smart TV", but it never got a password to the WiFi. It's driven by HDMI, and power. I don't even know where its remote is.

You ought to give it a shot - you might like it.

I don't watch sports (for longer then I can remember I told myself I want to start following Japanese baseball. Any year now ...). I just discovered 2 ~8 year old sitcoms, bought the entire series of one (it wasn't worth it). I got hooked on T:SCC last year, watched it 6+ times strait through. That'll never happen again, I know the episodes too well. What is there to watch? Every once in a while I'll take a gander at something at a restaurant or laundromat. Newer tv's shows are so sickeningly woke I can't stomach it. So to the extent I watch anything at all, it's likely to be pretty old or a documentary. Nothing much to watch.
